the art

Step into the dreamscape of Cape Byron with this powerful and highly detailed woodcut print by Byron Bay printmaker Sue Chakos.

Titled "The Bay in the Moonlight" this striking monochrome artwork weaves together history, culture, and nature. The scene looks across a shimmering, textured ocean toward the unmistakable silhouette of Cape Byron, illuminated by a brilliant night sky. In the foreground, a First Nations warrior stands in quiet contemplation, watching a classic wooden sailing boat anchored in the bay. Tucked subtly into the complex, hand-carved canopy of native trees, a local koala rests, grounding the piece in the rich biodiversity of the Northern Rivers.

Chakos masterfully uses crisp, high-contrast linework to mimic the fluid ripple of moonlit water and the rough textures of the coastal bark. "The Bay in the Moonlight" is a narrative-rich landscape that feels deeply spiritual.

A captivating statement piece full of storytelling, perfect for anyone who cherishes the layered history and timeless magic of Byron Bay.
